Yesterday on Old Bond Street you may have noticed an unfamiliar pink glow emanating from one of the street's most imposing buildings. We are pleased to reassure you that it wasn't as a result of extra-terrestrial happenings or an invasion of pink glow worms but rather it was in honor of Ralph Lauren's annual Pink Pony campaign for cancer research.

For the coming week Ralph Lauren stores worldwide will be illuminated in pink to celebrate the launch of the label's Pink Pony collection of products - available in store. It is a cause close to the man himself.

"I have been dedicated to the fight against cancer for more than fifteen years," Ralph Lauren explained. "The Pink Pony Fund marks my commitment to this important cause."

20 per cent of the price of each product from the range sold in the UK goes to The Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign to ensure that cancer can be treated earlier and more effectively across all communities.

New York Fashion Week saved some of its biggest names for last, with American designers Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger all showing their spring/summer 2010 collections on the final day yesterday.

Ralph Lauren, who turns 70 next month, unveiled a fantasy farm-girl look based on all-American blue denim workwear, accessorised with sparkling dainty shoes. Models walked down the catwalk to the sounds of Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan wearing stone-washed ripped jeans, denim overalls and flowery, country-style dresses. Blue remained the dominant colour on the runway when the workwear gave way to eveningwear, with cornflower-blue silk gowns.

Lauren said he had been inspired by America's frontier spirit in designing his anti-recession collection. "I have always loved real working clothes... I am inspired by the character of the worker, the farmer, the cowboy, the pioneer women of the prairies living authentically through challenging times". At the end of the show, Lauren, himself dressed in a pale denim shirt, stopped to kiss Janet Jackson who was sitting in the front row.

Tommy Hilfiger sported an A-list front row with actresses Emily Blunt, Naomi Watts and Mena Suvari all watching the show, as he showed Californian-inspired cuffed shorts as well as strapless minis and thigh-high jersey evening gowns. Over at Calvin Klein, models wore crinkled pieces in neutral colours and pastels. Guests included actresses Thandie Newton and Rose Byrne.

It may be for Ralph Lauren, but could these images of Kelly Brook technically be called a fashion shoot if it didn't feature any clothes? Newly released images of the former Strictly Come Dancing star show her posing with nothing more than a pale pink hydrangea branch for the U.S. designer. With tousled hair and sultry pout, the model, now 29, flaunted the figure for which she would become famous as presenter on The Big Breakfast alongside Johnny Vaughan. But why the images from the shoot did not feature any clothes remains unclear. Perhaps Ralph Lauren had a little-known sideline in floristry, or maybe the stylist forgot to pack the products. Further images from the set showed Kelly in a sports bra and briefs set.

Ralph Lauren was not the only major brand to have spotted Kelly's potential so early on. Fosters and Renault also employed her for campaigns, while Triumph commissioned a special 5-foot billboard of her bust. It was not long before a career in television beckoned, and as well as The Big Breakfast, Kelly presented Celebrity Love Island, as well as appearing in U.S. series Smallville and British film School for Seduction. Kelly is among a host of female stars to have posed in their heels this week in a bid to raise money to fund research into women's health issues. Along with Amanda Holden and Tess Daly, Kelly donned her favourite shoes for a sexy photo shoot to launch the Heels that Heal campaign.

Famous faces including Kylie Minogue, Cheryl Cole and the Prime Minister's wife Sarah Brown will also be delving into their shoe closet for an Ebay auction of stars' stilettos. People will also be able to bid for a series of exciting experiences including afternoon tea with Rachel Stevens or a shopping trip with Ms Holden. The auctioneers hope to raise £500,000 to help young women dealing with chronic gynaecological issues like PMS (Pre-menstrual syndrome), endometriosis and PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) women who are suffering from ovarian and cervical cancer and women determined to get pregnant and have a healthy baby.

Hard times. The Great Recession we're all living through got Ralph Lauren thinking about American resiliency. "I am inspired by the character of the worker, the farmer, the cowboy, the pioneer women of the prairies," he wrote in his program notes. So in place of the polo fields or any of his other tony stomping grounds, Lauren took us back to the dust bowl for Spring. Models in newsboy caps wore faded and torn oversize jeans with blue work shirts; patchwork overalls; nightshirts in mattress-ticking stripes; or sweet calico print dresses with white ankle socks and oxfords with heels.

It was cinematic, like most of Lauren's collections. And it goes without saying that his vision is a romanticized one: Henry Fonda's character in The Grapes of Wrath didn't carry a lizard-skin bag. In fact, the show played like a rags-to-riches tale, a story line dear to the designer's heart. After a few white cotton organdy dresses and some thirties-esque suits—think pinstriped three-pieces with cropped and gathered pants or a boxy d.b. with fuller trousers—the work jackets and carpenter pants reappeared in blue ombré silk charmeuse, the nightshirts came striped with beads, and the overalls were transformed into a floor-grazing lamé dress. A pair of evening jeans, completely covered in silvery beads save for the fraying holes, took the concept to the limit.

When Lauren came out for his bow, it was to the tune of Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone." He'll see the other side of this recession—no one works harder than he does; he's the great American brand.

Fashion icon Ralph Lauren took the watch world by storm earlier this year at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) in Geneva by introducing a primarily gold watch collection just when the luxury watch industry was sliding into its worst downturn since the Japanese invented quartz in the 1970s.

Gutsy? Sure. But then Lauren is known for taking business risks. In 1967, a major department store told him he should narrow his ties and remove his name. He refused. He went on to build a billion dollar empire.

And besides, Lauren’s watchmaking project, a 50/50 joint venture with the Richemont Group, has been four years in the making. At a black tie dinner held in his honor at the Grand Théâtre Geneva in January 2009, Lauren expressed his commitment to the craft to a group that included executives from some of his fellow Richemont brands (Cartier, Piaget, Baume & Mercier, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Vacheron Constantin, Montblanc, Van Cleef & Arpels, Lange & Sohne, IWC and Roger Dubuis).

“I’m not here as a visitor; I’m here as a watchmaker. I want to have an office next to you.” He later commented, “I hope you like the collection. If you don’t, well, look the other way.”

The collection offers 23 styles in three lines –Slim Classique, a round dress watch; the equestrian-inspired Stirrup collection; and the Sporting collection. The range includes white gold, rose gold, platinum and steel, with diamond options, decorated movements and two complications in an all-mechanical line.

The Stirrup has a white lacquered dial, railroad-style minute markers and 18k rose or white gold cases. A limited edition of 67 pieces in platinum are signed and numbered to commemorate 1967, the year the Ralph Lauren brand was created. The Slim Classique contains the ultra-thin (2.1mm-thick) Piaget P430 movement in a slender, knife-edged case in 18k gold or platinum. The Sporting collection includes two complications, a chronograph and a World Timer, both of which contain Jaeger-LeCoultre movements. Case options include 18k gold or steel.

Prices range from $9,000 to nearly $70,000 U.S.,

Nacho is a world-renowned polo player and a passionate family man, who through his fame and good fortune, has managed to do what he loves: stay committed to his wife and family (who travel with him everywhere) and maintain a humility not seen so often these days in media figures.

I spent a few afternoons with him while he was here in London to play in the Polo in the Park matches at Hurlingham Park, and we got to chatting over lunch at Cipriani, where he talked about his relationship with Ralph and how he defines success.

Tell a bit about this new movement to bring polo into the cities.

With Governors Island and with London, the idea is to bring the event around the world and as close to the cities as we can to create a fun, new spectator sport—and not just for the guy who goes to the Hamptons. People seem to think that polo is for just a few and you have to be invited and wear a hat and nice things. I love that side of the sport, but I think we need some more access.

Your life has changed dramatically since working with Ralph Lauren. How has it affected your family life?

What I think the kids get from what I do is that it’s a great lifestyle. They travel a lot, they go to different places, they speak two languages. I get to be with them a lot and spend time at home, which I think is a great thing. The downside is that they don’t go to school that regularly. To me the most important thing is for all of us to be together.

So, tell me about this new campaign: You are now the face of the World of Polo fragrances, Polo Black, Polo Blue and Polo Modern Reserve.

Ralph believes that fragrances are connected to what you are doing and the mood and the time of the day. The World of Polo is basically saying that there is not just one fragrance for one man but a sexy wardrobe of fragrances you get to use depending on what you are doing.

Now that you’ve been exposed to the fashion world, what you think of it all?

I have been working with Ralph for almost ten years now, so obviously I have a lot of friends in the fashion world. But to me fashion is like an art, it is something that is connected to the world. I don’t see it as a separate thing. To me Ralph is an artist. He paints a lifestyle and glamour and creates a feeling.

You are interested and art and architecture--have you seen any good shows while here in London?

I went to the National Art Gallery because I haven’t been in a few years. There is a Picasso show there now.

Do you collect art?

A little bit, yes.

Who are you collecting these days?

I have some Uruguayan, American, and Argentine artists.

Who are some of the American artists you are collecting?

I have a Warhol.

No! Really?

I have a very modest Warhol drawing….but, I am just starting. Right now I am putting most of my money in other things, but it’s something I would love to do more of. I have some Steven Klein photographs, really big ones I have bought.

Do you follow the art world in the sense that you are you looking at young artists that are coming up?

Delfina is a photographer and she has to be enveloped in her career, so because of her we have to look around to see what is going on. And I have a lot of friends in the art world like Peter Brant and Vito Schnabel. So I have a big connection with that side and so I get to see a lot of things.

What is your favorite piece of architecture in London?

I love the Tate Modern.

I am curious as to what you think of the architecture in London because it’s hard to put your finger on it sometimes—it doesn’t really have a cohesive quality to it.

It’s crazy! You go from the oldest building in the world to all of a sudden, a tower made of glass. I like London a lot; I think it’s a good balance. Sometimes it’s a little over the top, but I like it.

Describe a typical day for you.

There is no typical day for Nacho [laughs]. Today I’m in London having lunch at Cipriani; tomorrow I am playing polo in the park. The next day I am in Argentina in my house playing polo; then I am breeding horses on my farm. The next day I am in Brazil, and a week later I am in New York in a meeting wearing a suit or shooting a commercial. Then the next day I am playing polo in the Hamptons and that afternoon I will be at the beach with my kids.

What is it like working with Bruce Weber, who shot all of the Ralph Lauren fragrance ads? Tell me about his style.

He is amazingly focused. I feel very blessed about having been able to spend time with successful people like Ralph and Bruce. These guys are at the top of their game. Everyone who is very successful casts a similar footprint. It’s always about focus, dedication, passion for what for what they do, and you really can sense even with different styles that these guys have a lot of that. It’s inspirational. You see something or you sense something that is the same in all of them.

How do you define success?

We live in a capitalist world and everything seems to be measured in dollars. But success for me is for my wife and my kids to love me. But I also want very much for the sport of polo to be more recognized, and what happened on Governors Island in New York, that to me was a very big achievement.

It was huge.

To have four thousand guys from New York who knew anything about polo, screaming and yelling and having a great time, that was one of my biggest days.

Down came last season's gold antlers and up went a Moroccan lamp: Ralph Lauren looked to North Africa for Spring. For many in his audience today, it's a place that automatically conjures up images and thoughts of Yves Saint Laurent. But Lauren has been in business for 41 years now, and in that time he's mined every continent but Antarctica for inspiration, so if this was in part a respectful nod in the late Parisian designer's direction, it was mostly a fresh look at some of Lauren's own biggest hits.

The show opened with a khaki camp shirt that looked like it had just come back from safari (one sleeve was ripped at the shoulder) and beaded gold harem pants slung with two belts. Interspersed among the other silk-satin takes on that slouchy, relaxed silhouette—which happens to be right in step with the season—were bronze or white linen suits worn with matching shirts and metallic ties, as well as great, swaggering trenches in buttery leather and parachute silk.

Indiana Jones hats, turbans (some of them too literally over-the-top), and pearl-and-emerald sautoirs added to the show's adventurous spirit.

The theme continued into evening. A silk-linen gauze strapless gown in olive drab might be just the thing for a candlelit dinner in the Atlas Mountains, and shades of colonial Africa could be seen in a thirties-ish cream silk dress. A black silk evening jumpsuit, on the other hand, looked utterly urban and modern. Ubah Hassan, a model from Somalia, resplendent in a gold lamé column gown and beaded headdress, closed the show. Kudos to Lauren for addressing the diversity issue on the runways, and for a collection well done.

Ralph Lauren - For Fall, he went back to his roots, true, but he wasn't playing safe. Well, maybe just a little bit with Polo, where what I've come to think of as the Greenwich Village group (trust fund artist/boho) was nowhere in evidence.

Instead, there was a navy blazer paired with gray flannels, a yellow cabled cashmere cardie, and a banker-striped shirt that was quintessential Bedford, N.Y. One group was actually called Bedford Estate: Dusty pink cords and an authentic-looking Fair Isle gave the prep some punch.

With Black Label, Lauren consolidated the monochrome urban mood that is this range's signature, motocross leathers and all. Still the trim Savile Row silhouette with a pop of color in the shirts—and a fresh new luxe in a cashmere hoodie paired with a jacket in a silvery herringbone—but there was also a little devil in the details: a silk tie with a motif of topper-sporting skulls, a shirt with horizontal stripes, a twinset of cabled sweater and cardigan.

The Black collection adopted menswear's narrower silhouette some time ago—the high armhole, the skinny, flat-front pant. The silhouette was emphasized even more when it was shown as a monochrome combination of double-breasted suit, shirt, and tie in the same optical blue tone. But for Spring, the tailoring was complemented by an energetic toughness in the accompanying sportswear. Aside from hints of army life in a paratrooper jacket or pieces in olive linen, there was something of The Heroes of Telemark in a silver and white group. This time around, the same sort of alchemy also applied to the more conservative (for want of a better word) Purple and Black collections. With Purple, color was the key; paisleys and bright hues were played against tailored pieces. And with the suits, there was a new emphasis on lightness.

Ralph's own predilections were evident in trousers tied at the waist with a spotted tie, à la Gary Cooper. True, it was a stylist's touch, but so what, if that inspires you to play with the clothes. Lauren certainly provided plenty to work with.

Established menswear designers are going back to their roots this season, and no one knows his brand heritage better than Ralph Lauren The diversity of his men's collections, presented this week, allows for emphasis on tradition and simultaneous courting of new customers with more modern fare.

Creatively, the company remains focused on its sub-brand culture even as Polo—just like every other fashion and luxury brand—battles the challenges of the recession. The difficulties were crystallized Wednesday when Polo reported a decline in quarterly income and cut its full-year profit outlook.

Yet Ralph Lauren's vision has always remained consistent. And for fall, that means:

Purple Label, which began with made-to-measure tailoring, now represents the most traditional luxury that Ralph Lauren has to offer, whether in tailored clothing or sportswear. It is deliberately worldly, to contest the perception that Ralph Lauren merely stands for prep or Americana.

"Purple Label is classically the most sophisticated. It has an international quality. This could be Italian, it could be French," said Lauren

English influence comes through dandyish, gray or brown three-piece suits, complemented by shirts of fuchsia, violet or cornflower stripes, some horizontal. Scottish Highlands and equestrian life played into Purple Label sportswear.

"These are things you think you see in a lot of places because they're timeless and classy, but you really don’t," the designer noted.

The modern sleekness of Black Label, on the other hand, alludes to spy planes and Italian race cars. The tailored component is minimal and slim, and styled in monochromatic charcoal ensembles.

"Black Label is contemporary, somewhat technical. This is really saying what sportswear is. We took things from skiwear, various active things," said Lauren, gesturing to fitted and padded black leather racing jackets with bright pops of primary color.

"I love the ability to go from Purple Label, which has heritage, to Black Label, which feels like another brand," said Lauren.

The Polo label introduced two new suit silhouettes. One has a wide-notch lapel paired with trim flat-front trousers. The other has rolled shoulders. Here again are three-piece suits with striped dress shirts and wide club ties. "The three-piece suit feels modern to a young guy," said Lauren.

Polo sportswear was displayed in vignettes, including a tweedy hunting party and a '30s football rivalry.

And hidden behind a curtain, but meticulously arranged, was a display of RRL, the purely vintage-inspired line that is not wholesaled. Lauren said RRL enjoyed a serious following in Japan, where there is a resale market among collectors. Special-edition RRL jeans sell for $1,350 only in Ralph Lauren's Omotesando store in Tokyo. "It's a cult thing," said Lauren.

Polo and Richemont create jewellery company

Ralph Lauren is joining forces with Swiss luxury goods firm Compagnie Financière Richemont to create a jewellery and watch company. The joint venture – Polo Ralph Lauren Watch and Jewellery Co. S.A.R.L. - will be based in Switzerland , where it will design, make and distribute luxury watches and jewellery. Starting prices for watches will be $3,000.

“I believe strongly in this partnership,” Polo chairman Ralph Lauren said of the venture in a statement. “This business is an important part of our global luxury accessories strategy. I am confident that our unique design sensibility and luxury brand-building skills, combined with Richemont's unique experience on a global basis, creates an opportune way for this partnership to succeed.” Lauren and Richemont's executive chairman Johann Rupert have been working on the creation of this company for two and a half years. The venture is new to both; Polo has never crossed over into the jewellery and watch market before and Richemont has never collaborated with a designer, instead owning design companies in their entirety.

The pair chose a joint venture, instead of a license or partnership, because of its authenticity. “I don't have licenses,” Rupert told WWD. “The question with licenses is always who is controlling the design and who has the final say.”

The watches will debut in the spring of next year in Geneva and the first products will hit stores in fall 2008. Neither company wanted to give sales projections. Meanwhile, jewellery sales are likely to begin on a smaller scale than watches. Rupert said that the category would, however, grow faster than watches, taking into account that “generally as a sector, it is growing quicker than watches.”

According to Rupert, this joint venture is a one-off and does not mean that Richemont has changed its strategy. It will continue to own luxury brand portfolios, such as Cartier, Piaget, IWC, Jaeger-le-Coultre and Baume & Mercier. In terms of the strategy for the new company, it will be positioned as a global brand with considerable growth potential in the US.

Polo Ralph Lauren , the luxury goods brand that, like so many other high-end firms, has seen its stock battered by the economic headwinds, is digging in at the trophy 650 Madison Avenue, between 59th and 60th streets.

Sources have confirmed that Polo has renewed its lease for more than 150,000 square feet at the nearly 500,000-square-foot building exquisitely located in the middle of the Plaza District -- just one block away from Central Park and the GM Building.

Last we heard, Polo was the largest office tenant in the 27-story, emerald tower, which Hiro North American Properties last year sold to Ashkenazy Acquisitions and the Carlyle Group for $680 million.

Until a couple of years ago, the stretch between 71st and 72nd Streets on Madison Avenue, not far from where I live, was a pleasant retail hodgepodge of small boutiques. There was Alain Mikli, the eyeglasses purveyor, but its lease expired. The stationery store vanished, but the clerks were snooty, and I was glad to see them go. Silvano Lattanzi, bespoke shoemaker, moved up the avenue.

On the corner of 72nd Street was the Rhinelander mansion, built for a socialite who dreamed of living in a Loire Valley chateau. Since 1986, it has housed the 20,000-square-foot Ralph Lauren flagship. In 1993 a Bauhaus-inspired Ralph Lauren store selling sportier wear opened across the street.

But something slightly eerie has taken place: in the last couple of years those two Ralph Lauren emporiums reached out their tentacles and consumed every single one of the little storefronts on the west side of Madison between 71st and 72nd Streets. Hidden from view for weeks or months, the new shops emerged one by one from their white seedpods — excuse me, wallboard and scaffolding — as fresh outposts prepared to indoctrinate future generations of Ralph Lauren shoppers.

The only non-Polo entity left on the entire block is St. James’ Episcopal Church, an institution of historic social standing on the Upper East Side, which apparently could not be pried from its roost at the southeast corner. I, a Catholic, don’t attend, but I do have a good friend who comes from the kind of family that inspires the Lauren-esque blend of luxury, money and Pietàs.

“You know, I was married there once,” he tells me every time we walk past the church. “I just can’t remember to which wife.”

In that remark lies the genius of Ralph Lauren. Mr. Lauren has created a storybook fantasy out of the attractive parts of white Anglo-Saxon Protestant culture, leaving out all the ugly bits. When I think of that disappearing cryptoclass, I can’t help but think of John Cheever and the dislocation and anomie of “The Sorrows of Gin” or “The Swimmer.” But on Planet Polo, families dress up for horseback riding, golf and tennis, and pack their perfectly weather-beaten satchels for Nantucket and Bermuda. There are no divorces or drunks there, nor do families squabble over the last shreds of a dwindled fortune that once, long ago, vaulted their ancestors briefly into the upper classes.

For a while I tried to convince myself not to be alarmed at how the neighborhood had been transformed into a Disney-like mall of Ralph Lauren stores. But in the spring I read the Joan Didion memoir, “The Year of Magical Thinking,” and came across a passage in which Ms. Didion, who also lives nearby, describes how many times during the day she thinks of things to tell her husband, John Gregory Dunne, who had recently died. “I notice some change in the neighborhood that would interest him,” she writes. “Ralph Lauren has expanded into more space between 71st and 72nd Streets.”

I stopped. Rubbed my eyes. Reread. There it was: Page 194. This titan of literature, one half of perhaps America’s greatest literary duo of the last quarter-century, had seen fit, in the Pulitzer Prize-nominated ode to her late husband, to muse on Ralph Lauren’s expansion on Madison Avenue.

WALKING along the block, as I do almost every day, puts me in mind of walking along a stage set, from the perfectly shined brass knobs on the doors, to the outfit worn every day by Freddy, the man who hoses down the sidewalk in front of the Rhinelander mansion every morning: perfectly pressed khakis, Wellington boots and a Polo button-down. Ralph Lauren has a contract to run the design empire he founded, Polo Ralph Lauren, that does not expire for another year. But Mr. Lauren, the indefatigable fashion icon, has already re-upped through March 2013, when he will be 73. His five-year extension could be worth much more than $100 million, and that’s not counting the reimbursement for the mandatory use of private jets and helicopters for all of his business and personal travel.

Mr. Lauren, the chairman and chief executive, will receive a salary of $1.25 million as well as annual bonuses of as much as $19.5 million. And each year he will also get 100,000 options and 75,000 shares of restricted stock, currently worth more than $7 million. PATRICK McGEEHAN

HEIR SHOW It will be family night on Wednesday for the scions of two famous American clans at the big annual air show in Oshkosh, Wis.

Edsel B. Ford II, a Ford director and great-grandson of the company’s founder, Henry Ford, will team up with Eric Lindbergh, the grandson of Charles Lindbergh. They will introduce a showing of “The Spirit of Saint Louis,” the classic film starring Jimmy Stewart, at the EAA AirVenture, billed as the country’s biggest show for private aviation.

Mr. Lindbergh, the pilot, and Mr. Ford, the auto company founder, were friends, while Edsel Ford is known as an aviation buff. His presence is just part of the auto company’s expanded role at the show, which attracts 650,000 people a year. Ford, which has been the main corporate sponsor for AirVenture since 1999, will use it this year as a mini-car show. It will display vehicles like the Flex, a crossover scheduled to be introduced in 2008, and offer test drives and seminars.

Of course, Ford’s chief executive, Alan R. Mulally, is the company’s biggest current link to aviation: he joined Ford last year from Boeing. But Mr. Mulally will not be attending the show. MICHELINE MAYNARD

Less glamorous has been the ongoing litigation between Ralph Lauren and others that have tried to capitalize on the sport. In the latest case, the designer alleged that four logos with polo players the polo association had licensed to clothing maker Jordache infringed on Polo trademarks, but a jury approved all but one of the association’s logos. Ralph Lauren appealed, and the case is scheduled to go before the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in October. Mr. Ferguson said that the volume of litigation has tapered off.

The company, meanwhile, is saddling up for higher-profile events. For the third consecutive year, it is sponsoring the United States Open in Flushing Meadows, Queens, which began last week; for the last two years, the company also has sponsored Wimbledon.

At last year’s United States Open, the company’s 2,500-foot retail store on the stadium grounds had more transactions than any of its other nearly 300 retail stores, though a spokesman declined to give actual sales figures.

Polo Ralph Lauren Corporation reported net income of $161 million, or $1.58 per diluted share, for the second quarter of Fiscal 2009, compared to net income of $115 million, or $1.09 per diluted share, for the second quarter of Fiscal 2008. The second quarter results reflect a 10% increase in net revenues, operating income growth of 26% and a 40% increase in net income, which includes the benefit of a lower effective tax rate compared to the prior year period.

Net income for the first six months of Fiscal 2009 increased 26% to $256 million, compared to $204 million in the comparable period last fiscal year. The growth in net income for the year-to-date period reflects a 7% increase in net revenues, operating income that is 15% greater than the prior year period and a lower effective tax rate. Net income per diluted share increased 31% to $2.51 from $1.92 in the first six months last year.

Net revenues for the second quarter increased 10% to $1.43 billion, compared to $1.30 billion for the comparable period last year. The higher net revenues primarily reflect shipments of new products, growth in global retail sales and higher European wholesale revenues. First half net revenues grew 7% to $2.54 billion from $2.37 billion in the comparable period of Fiscal 2008. The growth in net revenues is primarily attributable to shipments of new products, global retail sales growth and higher European wholesale sales. Wholesale sales increased 10% to $846 million, compared to $772 million in the second quarter last year. Shipments of new products and higher European sales offset lower domestic shipments of our core men's, women's and childrenswear products. For the first six months of the fiscal year, wholesale sales increased 6% to $1.42 billion from $1.35 billion in the first half of Fiscal 2008. The year-over-year increase in wholesale revenue is attributable to new product shipments and higher European sales that more than offset a decline in domestic shipments of our core men's, women's and childrenswear products.

U.S. clothing giant Polo Ralph Lauren plans to stop using animal pelts in all the company's products, the New York-based fashion house said.
The Independent reported that the decision is seen as a victory for animal rights campaigners who have repeatedly shunned the use of fur for fashion. Polo Ralph Lauren's halt on fur will begin with the 2006 Christmas shopping season.

The decision to reject fur also is the first by a major fashion chain since Calvin Klein made a similar vow in the 1990s, The Independent said.

The company's decision was a victory for the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the newspaper said.

Sporting the tag-line, I'd rather go naked than wear fur, PETA has aggressively pursued a stop to the sale of furs. It also has repeatedly targeted celebrities who wear fur.

Polo Ralph Lauren said the company will donate leftover items including fur to charities for distribution among the poor.

You'll want to run to the south of France, after seeing the Malandrino collection, a watercolor splash of tangerine, ivy and geranium. Catherine Malandrino, inspired by a town called St. Paul de Vence, set her show against lush greenery. Out came slinky pieces that audience member Janet Jackson could squeeze into to show off her back-again bod.

Twinkle sent out petite pieces in soft chiffons. Though designers are relentless in their quest to get grown ups to wear jumpers, I don't think we should. Twinkle's shortie version is no exception.

To anchor these flyaway slips of shimmering fabric, Karan embroidered sea glass, mirrored panels and metallic chain links at the hip, neck or across the hem of a wrap skirt.

Just before the start of Ralph Lauren’s 40th anniversary show, as guests like Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly and the actors Robert DeNiro and Dustin Hoffman took their seats, there was music from “My Fair Lady.” A tug of Broadway, and then the show began, the music shifting to a faster contemporary beat as the first model stepped out in a white silk gown with a frilly black-edged hem and a wide black straw hat. Masculine coats, satin jodhpurs, trim vests and long polka-dot skirts with romantic white blouses seemed to animate the racecourse painting in the background.

The show, on Saturday night in the Central Park Conservatory Garden, was a vigorous display of Mr. Lauren’s imagination and wit, from the veiled bowlers and snow-white riding boots tipped in black to the long ruffled dresses in pastel garden prints, and the only location that might have better served his purposes than the park would have been Fifth Avenue itself. The clothes, while far from being costumes, had the pomp of an aristocratic parade.

Mr. Lauren could have gone in any number of design directions to mark his 40th anniversary. To Newport, the American West, the Adirondacks. Instead he chose New York, reflecting its energy and sophistication with crisp tailoring, a black leather coat banded in taxi-bright yellow, and a silver chain-beaded gown as cosmopolitan as the Chrysler building.
