


For the coming week Ralph Lauren stores worldwide will be illuminated in pink to celebrate the launch of the label's Pink Pony collection of products - available in store. It is a cause close to the man himself.


"I have been dedicated to the fight against cancer for more than fifteen years," Ralph Lauren explained. "The Pink Pony Fund marks my commitment to this important cause."


20 per cent of the price of each product from the range sold in the UK goes to The Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign to ensure that cancer can be treated earlier and more effectively across all communities.

Nacho is a world-renowned polo player and a passionate family man, who through his fame and good fortune, has managed to do what he loves: stay committed to his wife and family (who travel with him everywhere) and maintain a humility not seen so often these days in media figures.
I spent a few afternoons with him while he was here in London to play in the Polo in the Park matches at Hurlingham Park, and we got to chatting over lunch at Cipriani, where he talked about his relationship with Ralph and how he defines success.
Tell a bit about this new movement to bring polo into the cities.
With Governors Island and with London, the idea is to bring the event around the world and as close to the cities as we can to create a fun, new spectator sport—and not just for the guy who goes to the Hamptons. People seem to think that polo is for just a few and you have to be invited and wear a hat and nice things. I love that side of the sport, but I think we need some more access.
Your life has changed dramatically since working with Ralph Lauren. How has it affected your family life?
What I think the kids get from what I do is that it’s a great lifestyle. They travel a lot, they go to different places, they speak two languages. I get to be with them a lot and spend time at home, which I think is a great thing. The downside is that they don’t go to school that regularly. To me the most important thing is for all of us to be together.
So, tell me about this new campaign: You are now the face of the World of Polo fragrances, Polo Black, Polo Blue and Polo Modern Reserve.
Ralph believes that fragrances are connected to what you are doing and the mood and the time of the day. The World of Polo is basically saying that there is not just one fragrance for one man but a sexy wardrobe of fragrances you get to use depending on what you are doing.
Now that you’ve been exposed to the fashion world, what you think of it all?
I have been working with Ralph for almost ten years now, so obviously I have a lot of friends in the fashion world. But to me fashion is like an art, it is something that is connected to the world. I don’t see it as a separate thing. To me Ralph is an artist. He paints a lifestyle and glamour and creates a feeling.
You are interested and art and architecture--have you seen any good shows while here in London?
I went to the National Art Gallery because I haven’t been in a few years. There is a Picasso show there now.
Do you collect art?
A little bit, yes.
Who are you collecting these days?
I have some Uruguayan, American, and Argentine artists.
Who are some of the American artists you are collecting?
I have a Warhol.
No! Really?
I have a very modest Warhol drawing….but, I am just starting. Right now I am putting most of my money in other things, but it’s something I would love to do more of. I have some Steven Klein photographs, really big ones I have bought.
Do you follow the art world in the sense that you are you looking at young artists that are coming up?
Delfina is a photographer and she has to be enveloped in her career, so because of her we have to look around to see what is going on. And I have a lot of friends in the art world like Peter Brant and Vito Schnabel. So I have a big connection with that side and so I get to see a lot of things.
What is your favorite piece of architecture in London?
I love the Tate Modern.
I am curious as to what you think of the architecture in London because it’s hard to put your finger on it sometimes—it doesn’t really have a cohesive quality to it.
It’s crazy! You go from the oldest building in the world to all of a sudden, a tower made of glass. I like London a lot; I think it’s a good balance. Sometimes it’s a little over the top, but I like it.
Describe a typical day for you.
There is no typical day for Nacho [laughs]. Today I’m in London having lunch at Cipriani; tomorrow I am playing polo in the park. The next day I am in Argentina in my house playing polo; then I am breeding horses on my farm. The next day I am in Brazil, and a week later I am in New York in a meeting wearing a suit or shooting a commercial. Then the next day I am playing polo in the Hamptons and that afternoon I will be at the beach with my kids.
What is it like working with Bruce Weber, who shot all of the Ralph Lauren fragrance ads? Tell me about his style.
He is amazingly focused. I feel very blessed about having been able to spend time with successful people like Ralph and Bruce. These guys are at the top of their game. Everyone who is very successful casts a similar footprint. It’s always about focus, dedication, passion for what for what they do, and you really can sense even with different styles that these guys have a lot of that. It’s inspirational. You see something or you sense something that is the same in all of them.
How do you define success?
We live in a capitalist world and everything seems to be measured in dollars. But success for me is for my wife and my kids to love me. But I also want very much for the sport of polo to be more recognized, and what happened on Governors Island in New York, that to me was a very big achievement.
It was huge.
To have four thousand guys from New York who knew anything about polo, screaming and yelling and having a great time, that was one of my biggest days.

The awards ceremony took place this evening at the Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City .
For the first time, the CFDA asked the public to cast votes online for their favorite designer .
The Popular Vote Award was presented to Mr. Lauren by Steven Kolb, Executive Director of the CFDA .
In June 2007, the CFDA also awarded Mr. Lauren the first-ever American Fashion Legend Award. Mr. Lauren is the only designer to receive the Council of Fashion Designers of America's four highest honors - the Lifetime Achievement Award, the Womenswear Designer of the Year Award, the Menswear Designer of the Year Award, the Retailer of the Year Award - as well as the CFDA's Humanitarian Leadership Award .

Instead, there was a navy blazer paired with gray flannels, a yellow cabled cashmere cardie, and a banker-striped shirt that was quintessential Bedford, N.Y. One group was actually called Bedford Estate: Dusty pink cords and an authentic-looking Fair Isle gave the prep some punch.
With Black Label, Lauren consolidated the monochrome urban mood that is this range's signature, motocross leathers and all. Still the trim Savile Row silhouette with a pop of color in the shirts—and a fresh new luxe in a cashmere hoodie paired with a jacket in a silvery herringbone—but there was also a little devil in the details: a silk tie with a motif of topper-sporting skulls, a shirt with horizontal stripes, a twinset of cabled sweater and cardigan.

The Black collection adopted menswear's narrower silhouette some time ago—the high armhole, the skinny, flat-front pant. The silhouette was emphasized even more when it was shown as a monochrome combination of double-breasted suit, shirt, and tie in the same optical blue tone. But for Spring, the tailoring was complemented by an energetic toughness in the accompanying sportswear. Aside from hints of army life in a paratrooper jacket or pieces in olive linen, there was something of The Heroes of Telemark in a silver and white group. This time around, the same sort of alchemy also applied to the more conservative (for want of a better word) Purple and Black collections. With Purple, color was the key; paisleys and bright hues were played against tailored pieces. And with the suits, there was a new emphasis on lightness.
Ralph's own predilections were evident in trousers tied at the waist with a spotted tie, à la Gary Cooper. True, it was a stylist's touch, but so what, if that inspires you to play with the clothes. Lauren certainly provided plenty to work with.

Ralph Lauren - he opened with a little black dress, but he soon moved into taupe-y tweed suiting, soft pastel knits, and rich velvet dresses, finishing up with antique ivories and goldsalong the way he showcased his great-looking outerwear and subtly glamorous evening options, while touching on such treasured motifs as haberdashery, the equestrian world, and a spot of Anglophilia in the form of Fair Isle knits.
For the evening looks that closed the show, he stowed the outerwear, sending out one shimmery dress after another in ivory satin, pale pink charmeuse, or vintage gold lamé. The highlight of the bunch was a delicate frock with a silvery bodice and gauzy pink skirts to the knee, but they all fairly glowed.

New York – If any collection summed up the mood in the latest New York Fashion Week it was that of Ralph Lauren, whose patchwork yet patrician ideas for fall 2009 were all about high society entertaining.
Underneath a series of glittering crystal chandeliers, Lauren sent out splendid patchwork jackets and vests in mixes of windowpane check and Donegal tweed. But he varied their partnership, showing them with anything from tan cavalry twill pants to honey charmeuse silk paisley gowns.




Established menswear designers are going back to their roots this season, and no one knows his brand heritage better than Ralph Lauren The diversity of his men's collections, presented this week, allows for emphasis on tradition and simultaneous courting of new customers with more modern fare.
Creatively, the company remains focused on its sub-brand culture even as Polo—just like every other fashion and luxury brand—battles the challenges of the recession. The difficulties were crystallized Wednesday when Polo reported a decline in quarterly income and cut its full-year profit outlook.
Yet Ralph Lauren's vision has always remained consistent. And for fall, that means:
Purple Label, which began with made-to-measure tailoring, now represents the most traditional luxury that Ralph Lauren has to offer, whether in tailored clothing or sportswear. It is deliberately worldly, to contest the perception that Ralph Lauren merely stands for prep or Americana."Purple Label is classically the most sophisticated. It has an international quality. This could be Italian, it could be French," said Lauren
English influence comes through dandyish, gray or brown three-piece suits, complemented by shirts of fuchsia, violet or cornflower stripes, some horizontal. Scottish Highlands and equestrian life played into Purple Label sportswear."These are things you think you see in a lot of places because they're timeless and classy, but you really don’t," the designer noted.
The modern sleekness of Black Label, on the other hand, alludes to spy planes and Italian race cars. The tailored component is minimal and slim, and styled in monochromatic charcoal ensembles."Black Label is contemporary, somewhat technical. This is really saying what sportswear is. We took things from skiwear, various active things," said Lauren, gesturing to fitted and padded black leather racing jackets with bright pops of primary color.
"I love the ability to go from Purple Label, which has heritage, to Black Label, which feels like another brand," said Lauren.
The Polo label introduced two new suit silhouettes. One has a wide-notch lapel paired with trim flat-front trousers. The other has rolled shoulders. Here again are three-piece suits with striped dress shirts and wide club ties. "The three-piece suit feels modern to a young guy," said Lauren.
Polo sportswear was displayed in vignettes, including a tweedy hunting party and a '30s football rivalry.
And hidden behind a curtain, but meticulously arranged, was a display of RRL, the purely vintage-inspired line that is not wholesaled. Lauren said RRL enjoyed a serious following in Japan, where there is a resale market among collectors. Special-edition RRL jeans sell for $1,350 only in Ralph Lauren's Omotesando store in Tokyo. "It's a cult thing," said Lauren.
